Position Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an exempt NP or PA position on the Thoracic surgery team with responsibilities including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating, and educating patients. This position may include coverage and practice in both the outpatient practice setting with some coverage in the inpatient setting. There is the potential for some limited travel to other Thoracic satellite locations.
The APP will assess and provide care in collaboration with physicians. The APP will be responsible for carrying out the plan of care for his/her patients. The APP contributes to the actualization of the philosophy and objectives of the specific Division/Department. He/she practices within the scope of practice in care delivery. He/she participates in performance improvement and research activities,and maintains professional practice standards and clinical expertise.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors
- Document patient information and care in the medical record, in a confidential manner
- Write, Order and/or E-prescribe medications as appropriate under the Scope of Practice under New York State
- Sees patients in outpatient setting independently or in collaboration with the physician
- Facilitates patient education and preparation for surgery including supporting the practice team with clinical review of pre surgical clearance
- Round on surgical inpatients and facilitate the appropriate care.
- Counsels patient/family on health care matters
- Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, and treat illnesses.
- Consult with physicians as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of a NP’s/PA’s Scope of Practice
- Triage patient calls and evaluates patient’s problems and concerns.
- Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis
- Supports cancer program quality initiatives and potential research initiatives
- Assists in navigating patient to resources to support them in their treatment and recovery
- Performs all other related duties as assigned
Education & Experience Requirements
Nurse Practitioner:
- Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
- RNFA certification required
- Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
- Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (either Adult/Geriatric).
- Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement.
- Current National Certification
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) highly recommended
- Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges
Physician Assistant:
- Current New York State Licensed Physician Assistant
- Current National Certification
- Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant DOP
- Master’s degree from an accredited school
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) highly recommended
Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges

Essential Physical Requirements
- Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting and lifting.
- May require transferring patients.
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.

- Must have ability to communicate verbally with patients, relatives, attending physicians and with nurses and other hospital personnel
